November 2020: Beware of upgrading your Mac to Big Sur, possible irreversible problems.

Last week Apple kicked off the release of the update that brings the macOS operating system to the Big Sur edition. A significant step forward from what OS X has offered in the past, but not without bugs: there are many who report problems when installing the platform on a MacBook Pro (thus potentially risky on any other device as well).

macOS Big Sur: MacBook Pro problem, black screen

Those affected seem to be mostly those who own the 2013 and 2014 versions of the laptop, the oldest of those supported by the new version of the platform. During the update process they are suddenly faced with a black screen with no possibility to continue. Not even useful procedures to force a computer reboot, or PRAM and SMC reset seem to work. In short, the laptop becomes completely unusable from one moment to the next.

Some report that they have received instructions from Apple to send their MacBook Pro for repair. Others say that the problem has already been taken care of by Cupertino engineers to be fixed soon. At this time, there is no statement on the matter from bitten apple, either about the cause of the problem or the timeline for releasing a fix.

At the moment, the best advice for those with the 2013 and 2014 (as well as later) versions of the laptop is not to go ahead and install the update.

We at Smart Generation, although inside each sale advertisement it says that it has Big Sur 11.0 as a system already installed by us, we preferred to take a step back (for the time being), re-installing MacOS 10.15 Catalina on all refurbished Apple devices for sale on our e-commerce. This way we will give better service to buyers as well as stable, optimized and performing software with its latest Release 10.15.7.

We permanently discourage all our buyers from downloading and installing macOS Big Sur 11.0 until new fix updates are released. Our team assumes no responsibility if you decide to do so instead.

Good morning, I have booked the purchase of an Imac 27 5k i7 8 core, with 8 gb ram and 512 gb ssd disk, coming from a lifetime of all kinds of windows.
I ask for your advice: is it necessary to upgrade it right away as soon as I turn it on, to big sur as Apple proposes?
Don't you think it is instead a risk of ruining something that is already fine as it is being catalina factory installed?
Thank you very much for any response
